I loved this book。 The picture of Poe as a drunk or a drug addict never sat right with me。 To see him plausibly vindicated is wonderful。 Poe has always been one of my favorite authors and poets, and I love him even more!

3。5 rounded up。 Here’s the thing。 The scholarship of this book? Excellent。 The gimmick? Didn’t work for me。 A Mystery of Mysteries is a biography aiming to return the man of Poe into the myth, and to do that, Dawidziak has decided to organize his work in non-chronological order。 We open with Poe’s death, then return to his childhood, flipping between the last 3 months of his life with the rest of his 40 years。 As a rule? I really think biographies should start with the death of the subject, because - at least for me! - it helps you contextualize the author and start asking what was important to them。 Or maybe that’s a thing that just works *really well* for Poe and wouldn’t work for other subjects! The problem is this gimmick of back-and-forth works really well until, for me, it just didn’t。 You start having long, detailed chapters next to very short ones, going from years covered to days。 It’s a frustrating experience, especially when you get to the end。 Dawidziak has split Poe’s life at the last 3 months, but the last year was so interesting, and it left me wanting to return to that first or third chapter to finish his life in proper order。 So I have to knock points off for not jiving with the layout of the research。 But the research itself was great! It felt wonderful to hear from various experts woven throughout the historical record。 It was really cool to read from medical professionals about what probably killed Poe in the end! (Spoiler: it’s the obvious suspect)。 I think Dawidziak writes with great humor and pathos for Poe, which I greatly appreciated and it rubbed off on me (although I already felt sympathetic!)In hindsight I also like how grounded Dawidziak stays when talking about the ultimate mystery of Poe, which can be extrapolated to history at large。 I attempted a master’s in public history and only lasted a year in the program in part because it really got to me how *little* we know, and just how much is speculation。 Dawidziak always feels comfortable with that knowledge, which made me feel comfortable with the uncertainty of history。 Which is a big kudos to him! History is stronger when we admit that we don’t know things, I feel!Anyway。 A very neat, good read, even if it didn’t quite knock me out。 。。。more

An intriguing look at the life of Poe and the theories surrounding his mysterious death。 The only issue I had was with the book's structure - the chapters concerning the end of his life are mixed in with the chronological account。 This was a bit confusing and the book would have worked better if the order had remained simply chronological。 An intriguing look at the life of Poe and the theories surrounding his mysterious death。 The only issue I had was with the book's structure - the chapters concerning the end of his life are mixed in with the chronological account。 This was a bit confusing and the book would have worked better if the order had remained simply chronological。 。。。more

I feel the book was well researched but the presentation was off to me and a bit dry。 I didn't enjoy going back and forth in time。 I think I would have enjoyed more if written in chronological order。 In the references at the end it listed JW Ocker's Poe-Land as by Matthew Ocker (and I loved that book)。 All in all a decent read but will never land on my Poe shelf as a keeper I feel the book was well researched but the presentation was off to me and a bit dry。 I didn't enjoy going back and forth in time。 I think I would have enjoyed more if written in chronological order。 In the references at the end it listed JW Ocker's Poe-Land as by Matthew Ocker (and I loved that book)。 All in all a decent read but will never land on my Poe shelf as a keeper 。。。more

(DNFing at around the 40% mark, may come back to it one day。。。)I wanted this nonfiction account of Poe's untimely death to deliver on what it promised: mystery and intrigue。 Rather, this just seemed like a textbook rehashing of other insights/interviews from other writers and their novels about Poe and his relatively short life。 Did I learn some things? Yes。 Were they interesting? Somewhat。 Was the way the facts were compiled and presented to me compelling? This book is about Edgar Allen Poe and his untimely death。 It tries to explain the Poe that a lot of people might not know。 It attempts to discover the time before his death and events leading up to it。 This book will give anyone who thinks they know about Poe’s life, a new way to examine it!

3,5 stars。。。 I learned a lot about Poe, but the journey was kind of frustrating。 You are watching him hoping things will go well for him and when they do he just shoots himself in the foot somehow。

Poe is a mysterious person, who’s legend has only obscured the reality of the real person all the further, which is a lot of what this book is about trying to sort out。 The person revealed in these pages is a much more complex person than the brooding gothic caricature that the pictures of him shortly before his demise suggests。 He had a very productive career as a literary critic, which was what he was best known for most of his life。 His personal life is strange, but then again he was a person Poe is a mysterious person, who’s legend has only obscured the reality of the real person all the further, which is a lot of what this book is about trying to sort out。 The person revealed in these pages is a much more complex person than the brooding gothic caricature that the pictures of him shortly before his demise suggests。 He had a very productive career as a literary critic, which was what he was best known for most of his life。 His personal life is strange, but then again he was a person who was neither quite of the North or of the South in the years just prior to the American Civil War。 Strange might just be what the times needed。 The structure of this book is quite unusual in how it bounces back and forth between his life and the period leading up to his very odd death。 It works though, as it helps to explore a very different context to his famous tragedy, in which perhaps he was unknowingly cursed to die how he did from his very birth。 The book puts forth TB as the most likely cause of his death。 It happens that in a prior career TB was literally my whole world, and what is put forth makes a lot of sense to me。 It’s uncommon how he might have manifested it, but not unheard of, and it fits up with his health throughout his life。 。。。more

This was interesting。 It kinda felt like it jumped around to random things though it seemed like what it was trying to do was talk about his life a little and talk about different causes of death that are believed to be the way he died。 Some were ruled out pretty quickly, others went on for a bit。 It felt like it jumped around too much for me。 I felt a little lost at times。 The author does say what he believes the strongest theory of his death may be and doesn't get that into it。 Overall, it jus This was interesting。 It kinda felt like it jumped around to random things though it seemed like what it was trying to do was talk about his life a little and talk about different causes of death that are believed to be the way he died。 Some were ruled out pretty quickly, others went on for a bit。 It felt like it jumped around too much for me。 I felt a little lost at times。 The author does say what he believes the strongest theory of his death may be and doesn't get that into it。 Overall, it just felt alright。 。。。more

This was an excellent breaking down of the caricature that Poe has become in popular culture。 So much more than the “master of the macabre” as the author states。 A funny, lively, personable poet who was more known as a critic and editor than a horror story creator。 Poe was a genius whose life mysteriously ended early。 There is no end of speculation to how Poe died and I’m honestly feel no need to know for sure what killed him。 But this book did help me grow a broader appreciation for an author I This was an excellent breaking down of the caricature that Poe has become in popular culture。 So much more than the “master of the macabre” as the author states。 A funny, lively, personable poet who was more known as a critic and editor than a horror story creator。 Poe was a genius whose life mysteriously ended early。 There is no end of speculation to how Poe died and I’m honestly feel no need to know for sure what killed him。 But this book did help me grow a broader appreciation for an author I have always loved。 。。。more

Poe's death has always interested me - it's just remarkable that the inventor of the modern mystery died in such a mysterious way。 This book didn't disappoint in terms of its purpose as a biography, that said, it was pretty slow at times。 I most appreciated Dawidziak when he put out a few new theses about Poe and his impact。 That new territory was most compelling。 Poe's death has always interested me - it's just remarkable that the inventor of the modern mystery died in such a mysterious way。 This book didn't disappoint in terms of its purpose as a biography, that said, it was pretty slow at times。 I most appreciated Dawidziak when he put out a few new theses about Poe and his impact。 That new territory was most compelling。 。。。more

I really liked this one。 Every Halloween one of my area’s museums does a Poe showing。 There are three stock actors who are employed for simulations put on about an 1。5-2 hour play type deal。 And then there is like an Appalachian trio between set changes who sing poems of poes that they have set to music。 And my first attendance is when The Bells became my favorite Poe poem。 It was like harmonizing as each one did different verses on top,of each other while some vocal cadence brought the voice of I really liked this one。 Every Halloween one of my area’s museums does a Poe showing。 There are three stock actors who are employed for simulations put on about an 1。5-2 hour play type deal。 And then there is like an Appalachian trio between set changes who sing poems of poes that they have set to music。 And my first attendance is when The Bells became my favorite Poe poem。 It was like harmonizing as each one did different verses on top,of each other while some vocal cadence brought the voice of each bell out of their mouths。 Just amazing。 This book really opened my eyes to his strife, but I also do accept the fact that some of his issues with being accepted during his lifetime were of his making。then you have to admit that many of his contemporaries were envious of his talent so they made his life a living hell。 He was so misunderstood。 So just so you are aware this book isn’t really focused on his works of art, but most of it is a rendition of circumstances of his life loggerheads with just about everyone he knew because of his health issues and his family connections。 。。。more

This is a soft pick。 The text is interesting, but dry。 Grover Gardner is a good narrator, but I find his voice soporific, which doesn’t help the academic tone of the book。 Despite those shortcomings, it is a good look at the man behind the myth。 If you’re a fan of Poe’s writing, this is worth the effort to read。

For fans of Edgar Allen Poe, this was great。 I learned a lot about Poe, who I've always loved for his creepy atmospheric ghost stories and vivid imagery。 We still don't know exactly how he died, but we can rule out a few things。 The chapters hop back and forth between Poe's life, and the last two months of his life。 It was a little confusing as to who was who, but I can see why the author structured it that way。 For fans of Edgar Allen Poe, this was great。 I learned a lot about Poe, who I've always loved for his creepy atmospheric ghost stories and vivid imagery。 We still don't know exactly how he died, but we can rule out a few things。 The chapters hop back and forth between Poe's life, and the last two months of his life。 It was a little confusing as to who was who, but I can see why the author structured it that way。 。。。more

In A Mystery of Mysteries, Mark Dawidziak sets the tone for his search for the cause of death of Edgar Allan Poe before he begins his narrative with a beginning quote from Poe’s works: The breeze – the breath of God – is stillAnd the mist upon the hillShadowy – shadowy – yet unbroken, Is a symbol and a token – How it hangs upon the trees,A mystery of mysteries! He begins his account with Poe’s passing from this life on an appropriately stormy night on October 7, 1849 when he was only forty years In A Mystery of Mysteries, Mark Dawidziak sets the tone for his search for the cause of death of Edgar Allan Poe before he begins his narrative with a beginning quote from Poe’s works: The breeze – the breath of God – is stillAnd the mist upon the hillShadowy – shadowy – yet unbroken, Is a symbol and a token – How it hangs upon the trees,A mystery of mysteries! He begins his account with Poe’s passing from this life on an appropriately stormy night on October 7, 1849 when he was only forty years old, adding that nobody knows the precise cause。 He spends the rest of the book alternating between the last months of Poe’s life and his decease。 Speculation about causes include syphilis, alcoholism, rabies, murder, or some combination of factors。 The circumstances of his death would be appropriate for one of his own horror stories。 The author takes a look at the many accounts and assesses the reliability of widely divergent pictures of Poe himself as well as his death。 While a neat conclusion is missing, the information will fascinate fans of Poe’s work。 I found the time switches distracting but probably could have solved that by taking closer note to the dates at the beginning of each chapter。 。。。more

I had high expectations about this book。 Unfortunately, these were not met。 Little light was shed on the mystery of Poe's Death and the attempt at giving an account of his life is filled with unrelated events that sincerely distracted the narrative。 Many books have been written on this subject and if another one comes out, the least one would expect is that it says something new。 I had high expectations about this book。 Unfortunately, these were not met。 Little light was shed on the mystery of Poe's Death and the attempt at giving an account of his life is filled with unrelated events that sincerely distracted the narrative。 Many books have been written on this subject and if another one comes out, the least one would expect is that it says something new。 。。。more

This book is worth reading for any Edgar Allen Poe fan。 Overall the book has lots of information about Edgar Allan Poe and it is well researched。 It has so much information that at times it can get slow to read。 Each chapter alternates between timelines from his early life to the last few weeks which at times made it a bit confusing。 I am glad that I read this book as I did learn a lot about the life of Edgar Allen Poe。
